Barbie was unveiled for the first time at the American Toy Fair in New York City in on March 9, 1959. She was created by Mattel co-founder Ruth Handler, who noticed that her daughter Barbara was choosing to play with paper dolls over traditional baby dolls.

Since then Barbie has had more than 180 occupations and represented more than 40 nationalities. She has also evolved from a doll criticized for having unrealistic body proportions to one with three different body types, seven skin tones, 22 eye colors and 24 hairstyles.
